Harold Gribble is a character in Round The Twist.

About[]

Harold is well-off, has a wife and son that he takes for granted and assumes that everyone is on his side. He would have liked to buy the Lighthouse from Nell, but he didn't have any funds at the time it was up for sale. Harold is a greedy real-estate agent who often tries to force the Twists to move out of the lighthouse with business schemes, for property development. Harold acts friendly, but is extremely pushy and is prone to throwing tantrums when he's beat.

Biography[]

Wunderpants[]

Harold shows a couple of developers around Port Niranda including the beach and Heritage Trust St. Johns Church. They keep running into Pete Twist exhibiting extraordinary behaviour so they take photos of themselves with him to document the events.

Know All[]

Harold shows up to the Lighthouse with a few American developers from Dallas, Texas, and an acquisition order from the mayor. Tony, who is wearing special fortune teller clothing and now has the ability to see into the future while wearing the outfit, predicts the order will be thrown out of court. Tony ignores Harold and the developers and doesn't even bother throwing them off the property due to his correct prediction of rain.

Harold returns with the developers to find a scarecrow chasing Linda around the property. Harold gets back in his car and drives away, leaving the developers to run after him.

As a last resort, Harold shows the developers a large empty piece of land, but when they see a scarecrow they quickly drive away, stealing Harold's four-wheel drive. As Tony drives by, Harold waves him down. Tony tells Harold to get in the back. However when he sees two clowns, one of which used to be the scarecrow, Harold is so shocked he is simply left standing there.

Lighthouse Blues[]

Harold brings Mr. Henderson to the lighthouse with a compulsory acquisition order from the council. He intends to have the lighthouse redeveloped into the Henderson-Gribble Amusement Park, and evict the Twists. However, when he finds out that Mr. Henderson wants to demolish the lighthouse, he sides with the Twists and the rest of Port Niranda in protesting the demolition by singing "Danny Boy".

Harold initially thinks his wife has gone mad after she sees Sarah and keeps talking about her, despite thinking that ghosts are "figments of a warped imagination". Once Harold sees the rest of the Rickards, he accepts that ghosts do exist.

While being removed from the lighthouse, Harold mentions his middle name, yelling that "nobody makes a monkey out of Harold J. Gribble!".

Welcome Back[]

Gribble Realty sponsors Port Niranda's production of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" for the historical pageant of the Welcome Back to Port Niranda Festival, but only because Harold wants to manipulate Mr. Snapper into only giving parts to his family and his son's friends. Harold originally wants to play Hamlet and is indignant at being called too old to do so, stating that he is "young-ish". He is upset when the Von Clapp Family Players (disguised as the Twists) show up and reclaim their parts to get their final curtain call.

He later plans to hijack the show back from the Von Clapps (who he still believes to be the Twists). The Von Clapps trick them by sticking their heads through a wall, then pretending to teach the trick to the Gribbles, Tiger and Rabbit. They are locked in a dressing room. The Von Clapps impersonate them for the show, while the Twists play their own parts. At the end of the performance, the Gribbles, Tiger and Rabbit bust out of the room by using Tiger as a battering ram, and stumble onto the stage confused, making fools of themselves.

Trivia[]

  • In Lighthouse Blues Harold mentions his full name is "Harold J. Gribble". The middle initial may have been an ad-lib by actor Frankie J. Holden, as this is his own middle name.
  • Frankie J. Holden declined to reprise the role of Harold Gribble in the second series (as he was busy doing comedy TV series Late for School).
  • Before Mark Mitchell was cast, other actors were also considered for the role, including Glenn Robbins, Russell Gilbert, Steve Vizard, Tom Oliver, Peter Moon, John Jarratt, Bryan Brown, the late Ross Higgins, Terry Serio and Ian McFadyen (who have also declined the role).
